Will he even get playing time at Chelsea

Neymar was heavily linked with a shock move to Chelsea towards the end of the summer transfer window. The 31-year-old faced an uncertain future at Paris Saint-Germain with his contract in the French capital set to expire in two-years.

Interestingly, Neymar almost joined the Blues in 2010 after the club were said to have offered ‘lots of money’. But, the Brazil international snubbed a move to the Premier League and joined Barcelona a few years later instead.

Now, Neymar has decided to embark on a new challenge and test himself in the Saudi Pro League. So, with that being said, football.london has taken a look at the latest news regarding the Brazilian’s future…

Al-Hilal switch confirmed

PSG have confirmed that Neymar has joined Al-Hilal after six-years in the French capital. A club statement from Nasser Al-Khelaïfi reads: “It is always difficult to say goodbye to an amazing player like Neymar, one of the best players in the world.

I will never forget the day he arrived at Paris Saint-Germain, and what he has contributed to our Club and our project over the last 6 years. We had a great moment and Neymar will always be a big part of our history. I would like to thank Neymar and his family. We wish Neymar all the very best for the future and his next adventure.”

Al-Hilal medical booked

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar is undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, according to The Athletic. Neymar is set to sign a two-year deal with Al Hilal.

The Brazil international had played throughout PSG’s pre-season but it became clear last week that he — as well as midfielder Marco Verratti — was not in the club’s plans for the upcoming season under new head coach Luis Enrique.

Saudi push

Neymar could be set to become the latest high profile name moving to Saudi Arabia after Fabrizio Romano wrote that Al Hilal have sent a big offer his way.

It is described as a ‘huge bid’ and negotiations are now said to be underway. Neymar, who missed out on PSG’s Ligue 1 opening game draw with Lorient, is tempted by the proposal having been told he’s not in the plans under Luis Enrique this season at Parc des Princes.

Romano also added that talks are now advanced and are approaching key stages.

PSG meeting

Reports in France suggest that Neymar was told in a meeting with PSG recruitment director Luis Campos and manager Luis Enrique that he wouldn’t be part of the club’s plans for the new season. He, Marco Verratti, Hugo Ekitike, Juan Bernat and Renato Sanches have all been made surplus to requirements.

It has been suggested that he will now seek a new club despite playing a role in the pre-season tour this summer. PSG start their new season against Lorient on Saturday.

Neymar Sr breaks silence

Chelsea have been handed another major blow to their hopes of signing Neymar this summer. The 31-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit from Paris Saint-Germain after recently entering the final two-years of his contract in the French capital.

Speaking to Spanish publication Sport, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Neymar Sr said: “I cannot confirm a piece of news that did not happen. It came from somewhere, let’s try to understand the intention.”

Neymar demand

L’Equipe report that Neymar has told his management team that he wants to leave PSG this summer. The 31-year-old is reportedly keen on a return to Barcelona as well as the French side look prepared to lose all of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar all in the space of one window.

His contract is due to expire in 2025, giving him just under two years before he can leave for free.

PSG stance

Neymar has opened up on his future, revealing that he wishes to stay at PSG despite reports linking him with a move away. “I hope to play this season at PSG, I have a contract with Paris,” he said in an interview with Brazilian YouTube channel Que Papinho. “So far, no one has told me anything [about leaving].”

He added: “The process [after injury] was very painful and it is very difficult, but I am trying to come back well. Obviously, winning is always part of the objectives, but I want to play well again, that’s the first thing.”

Al-Hilal offer

CBS Sports report that a senior delegation from Al-Hilal flew to the French capital on Friday, intending to test the waters around Neymar’s camp and ascertain whether he is amenable to make the move to the kingdom. Personal terms would be comparable to those of Ronaldo, whose total package is believed to be around €200million (£171m) a year.

The report adds that the Saudi giants, 18-time league champions, would be prepared to pay in the region of €45million (£38m) as a transfer fee however they are yet to open dialogue with Paris Saint-Germain over the signing.

Boehly meeting

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe will be hoping his ongoing feud with Neymar comes to an end this summer with the French outfit open to selling the Brazilian. Neymar has received a transfer proposal from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal despite interest from Chelsea in signing the the 31-year-old.

PSG are looking to sell Neymar and reduce their wage bill ahead of next season as they look to revamp their squad. Lionel Messi has signed for MLS side Inter Miami after his two-year spell in Paris came to an end.

The Argentina World Cup winner is said to have acted as a ‘mediator’ to help quell the ongoing discontent between Mbappe and Neymar. Following Messi’s exit, PSG are looking to sell Neymar with Al-Hilal representatives flying to France to negotiate a deal for the Brazilian – as per CBS Sports.

This comes just months after Chelsea owner Todd Boehly help a meeting with the French club to discuss Neymar’s availability this summer. The American co-owner reportedly flew into Paris in February to meet with PSG chiefs ahead of the first leg of their Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

Barcelona plan

Chelsea could be involved in a transfer triangle with Neymar, PSG and Barcelona this summer, according to reports. It is said that Barcelona will now move on from Lionel Messi with Bernardo Silva one of their targets but PSG also have the midfielder on their radar and are more likely to make him an addition.

Silva has long been linked with a move away from Manchester City and it could leave the coast clear for Chelsea to make a move for Neymar, who it is said they are still interested in.

It all leaves much to be decided but may well leave the way for Todd Boehly to finally complete a transfer he has been keen on since taking over at Chelsea.

Barcelona return ruled out

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has ruled out making a move to bring Neymar back to the Catalan club. The Spaniard discussed rumours of Neymar potentially moving back to the Camp Nou this summer.

“I’m surprised… he’s not in our plan,” he told JijantesFC. “I really like Ney as a friend, but we have different priorities.”

Pushing for an exit

According to Brazilian publication UOL, PSG are eager to sell Neymar this summer in order to free up space on their wage bill. In fact, they’re so keen to sell the Brazil international that they would be willing to accept a ‘significantly’ lower offer than usual.

The report adds that Neymar is aware of the French giant’s decision and he’s now pushing for an exit. UOL have outlined that Chelsea are joined by Manchester United and Newcastle in the race.

Physicality fears

In an interview with the Daily Mail in February 2021, Neymar vented his frustrations at the physicality in Ligue 1. He said: “I do not get to watch a lot of the Premier League, but I have heard that there’s a lot of physical contact involved in the game… But the French league also has too much physical contact.”

Premier League dream

Despite Neymar’s fears of the physicality, he once claimed that every top player must test themselves in the Premier League. As quoted by the Mirror in 2018, the Brazilian said: “It’s a big competition. One of the greatest in the world.

We don’t know how tomorrow will be, but I believe that every great player, at least one day, has to play in the Premier League. If you’re playing there, then I hope you can keep enjoying the Premier League, because you deserve only the best!”

Secret meeting

Earlier this year, French outlet Le Parisien reported that Todd Boehly travelled to Paris for talks with Nasser Al-Khelaifi regarding a possible a deal for Neymar. Foot Mercato later added that the American billionaire later met with the Brazilian’s entourage and has now taken the ‘matter into his own hands’.
