BREAKING: Gusau, NFF Board Members Resign

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office, alongside members of the federation’s Executive Committee.

Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, bringing a dramatic turn to the leadership crisis confronting Nigerian football.

According to the Super Eagles news account on X, Gusau was joined in resigning by members of the NFF Executive Committee.

The development comes amid mounting concerns over Nigeria’s recent footballing setbacks, particularly the failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the qualification play-off, a result that ended Nigeria’s historic record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament began.

Before the World Cup qualification setback, the Super Falcons had also exited the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage following a defeat to Cameroon.

The Super Eagles have equally endured a difficult period, having failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Beyond the teams’ performances, the NFF leadership has faced scrutiny over its handling of a reported N17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.

The federation has also been under pressure following allegations contained in a fact-finding committee report, which reportedly accused some board members and officials of influencing invitations to national teams for financial benefit.

Gusau’s resignation comes just weeks before the NFF elective congress scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
