BMW’s chief technology officer suggests the day could come when it sells “highly emotional” products in a new class of car.

The impending end of the Z4 will leave a void in BMW’s lineup that won’t be filled anytime soon. In April, the last roadster will roll off the assembly line, with no promise of a direct successor. So what comes next? The Bavarians are silent, but there is a glimmer of hope that fun cars will not be completely ignored, writes BMWblog.

Joakim Post told Auto Motor und Sport that a low-volume product would have to make financial sense to get the green light. Speaking about the “G29,” the chief technology officer explained that the rear-wheel-drive roadster was launched “at exactly the right time.” The math worked in BMW’s favor when Toyota stepped in to sell its own version—the Supra.

Although the two automakers continue their joint hydrogen fuel cell efforts, a new sports car is off the table. However, BMW is giving enthusiasts a reason to breathe a sigh of relief by promising that interesting vehicles are on the horizon. While a new Z4, or anything that directly replaces it, won’t happen, the chief technical officer suggests that a different kind of high-performance car could emerge:

“Our goal is to realize vehicle projects that are both emotionally appealing and profitable. We have traditionally stood for products that offer the ultimate in driving pleasure. Now we are looking ahead, but one thing is certain: we will continue to make highly emotional vehicles in the future. Maybe in the future, there will be other great models in new segments that are not yet on our radar.”

That’s refreshing to hear, given that the Z4’s days are numbered. Joakim Post added that the M240i and M2 are staying. This coincides with reports that production of the “G42” and “G87” will continue until mid-2029. The 4 Series and M4 are also expected to stick around until the end of the decade.

BMW is currently focused on introducing Neue Klasse technology and styling to around 40 models by the end of 2027. After that, the brand is rumored to expand its portfolio with entry-level i1 and i2 electric vehicles, along with a rugged SUV offering plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains, all before the end of the decade.
