BMW Recalls The X5 Again Because Of Airbags

Nearly ten years after the Takata airbag scandal, BMW is recalling 5,361 X5 SUVs made between 2000 and 2021 due to potentially faulty Takata PSDI-4 inflators, which could become dangerous explosives under certain conditions.

So far, Takata pillows have caused 36 deaths and more than 400 injuries worldwide.

Although most of the affected vehicles were recalled several years ago, BMW revisited its archives when preparing technical campaigns for markets outside the US and discovered a potential oversight. Namely, part of the American owners could subsequently replace the standard steering wheel with a sports one, which in some cases contains precisely the risky PSDI-4 inflator.

It is estimated that only 0.1 percent of recalled cars are actually affected by the problem; however, BMW is conducting a full recall as a precaution. Although it is a small number of cars, the consequences could be fatal. Owners will be notified of the recall shortly before Christmas. At the service center, technicians will inspect and, if necessary, replace the driver’s front airbag, completely free of charge.

This new episode reminds us that the Takata case, despite the millions of cushions already replaced, is still far from over.
