The future of BBIH 

The IHR are delighted to confirm that it has now signed a new five year agreement with Brepols that secures the future of the Bibliography. Both the IHR and Brepols are very excited about the new opportunities the agreement offers in growing the Bibliography and its community of users.  

What’s new in BBIH?  

The June 2025 update to the Bibliography of British and Irish History adds 4,508 new publications. The new update includes books, journal articles, book chapters and edited collections covering all areas of British and Irish history, from 55 BCE to the present day. This now means that BBIH contains 671,387 records. 

The June 2025 update include:  

  • 4180 titles that were published in 2015-2025
  • 326 publications relating to Scottish history
  • 2,014 publication about the histories of England and Wales, including 100 publications about the history of Wales and 1,945 publications focusing on England
  • 381 publications focusing on Irish history, including 50 publications focusing on Northern Ireland
  • 868 new records for ‘Imperial and Commonwealth’ of which: 140 records discuss the colonial histories of Australasia and the Pacific and 428 records refer to histories of Asia

Several new features have been added to BBIH’s new interface since the last update, including: 

  • Bibliometrics contains information based on author, journal, book series, publisher and subject

  • Search History automatically stores all your searches for the duration of your current session. You can use the links to view the corresponding results (view selection button) or to further refine your search (edit search button).

New BBIH section editor 

The IHR and Brepols would like to welcome Dr Deborah Wilson asnew BBIH section editor for Ireland since 1800. Deborah succeeds Dr Richard Butler.

The IHR and Brepols would like to thank Richard for their work on BBIH, and welcome Deborah in their new role.  

Environmental and refugee histories in BBIH

Over the next few months there are international observances for the histories of exiles and refugees and the environment. You can use the Bibliography to research both these areas as it contains: 

  • Over 300 publications about the histories of exiles and refugees. The June 2025 update contains 39 new records related to this area. 
  • 16,500 publications related to the environment ranging from specific environmental types (including rural and urban environments), environmental policy and historical attitudes to environmental conservation or animals. The June 2025 update contains 237 new publications. 

You can delve into these areas of research further by exploring the online reading lists focusing on the histories of refugees and exiles and the environment created by the Bibliography’s editors and Brepols.

About the Bibliography of British and Irish History 

The Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is the largest and most comprehensive guide available to what’s been written about British and Irish history, from the early 1900s to the present day.

It’s an essential resource for research and teaching, providing up-to-date information (and links) on over 670,000 history books, articles, chapters, edited collections and theses. New records are added in three annual updates. These records are searchable by a wide range of facets including: title, author, chronology, date and form of publication, historical topic and geographical region. 

The Bibliography is a research project of the UK’s Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and our publisher Brepols.  

BBIH is a subscription service and is available remotely via university and research libraries worldwide. Individual subscriptions are also available for personal use including substantially reduced rates for:

  • IHR Friends and Fellows.
  • Royal Historical Society Fellows and members.
  • Members of the British Association for Local History and Historical Association.
