In a recent address to party supporters at his residence, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), disclosed that his campaign team opposed his decision to concede defeat in the December 7 presidential election.

Despite their reservations, Dr. Bawumia chose to acknowledge the outcome early, prioritizing the peace and stability of the nation.

He announced his concession on December 8, shortly after the vote-counting process began, and before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.

The Electoral Commission later announced John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the election, securing 6,328,397 votes, which accounted for 56.55% of the valid votes cast.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his decision to concede promptly was guided by his commitment to upholding Ghana’s democratic principles and ensuring the country remained peaceful. “The stability of Ghana must always come first,” he stated.

The NPP flagbearer also expressed gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering dedication throughout the campaign. He urged them to remain steadfast in their belief in the party’s ideals and to continue working towards a stronger and more united Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia recounted the discussions with his campaign team, saying, “Some of my people in my team were saying, you can’t go out to concede, we don’t know if all this data is right, let’s wait. But I said, look, we know this data is right from our own system.”

He further explained that delaying the concession could have led to increased tension and violence, as people might have perceived the NPP as attempting to rig the election. Dr. Bawumia noted that his prompt concession was unprecedented, as no one had ever conceded an election without the Electoral Commission’s official announcement.
