Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the appointment of Professor Badejo Ayodeji Olawunmi as the new Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the appointment on Wednesday.

Badejo will succeed Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, whose five-year tenure as the university’s Vice-Chancellor is ending.

Olatunji-Bello assumed office as LASU’s ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor in September 2021.

Her single, non-renewable five-year tenure is scheduled to end on September 19, 2026.

The university had already held a valedictory session for Olatunji-Bello on August 27, ahead of the conclusion of her tenure.

During the session, LASU’s Registrar, Emmanuel Fanu, said she had presided over 55 statutory Senate meetings during her administration.

In its announcement, the Lagos State Government said the incoming Vice-Chancellor is a professor of Guidance and Counselling.

Badejo, born on August 4, 1962, obtained a PhD in Guidance and Counselling and a Master of Education in the same field from the University of Lagos.

She will take over the leadership of LASU as the institution prepares for a new administrative phase following Olatunji-Bello’s departure.

During Olatunji-Bello’s tenure, LASU recorded developments in academic accreditation, research, infrastructure, staff development, and student welfare.

At a recent Senate valedictory session, the university said her administration had also promoted 127 academic staff to the rank of professor and established LASU as a TETFund Centre of Excellence.

Badejo’s appointment marks the start of a new leadership era at the university, established in 1983, with its main campus in Ojo, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government did not disclose the effective date of Badejo’s appointment in the statement announcing her selection.
