Asus has marked the 20th anniversary of its Republic of Gamers brand with a new handheld gaming PC, the ROG Ally X20, unveiled at Computex 2026.

While it shares its overall design language with the ROG Xbox Ally X, the X20 introduces a range of changes that push it in a more premium, display-focused direction.

The most significant upgrade is the shift to an OLED display. Asus hasn’t revealed full panel specifications yet, but the move alone positions the Ally X20 closer to high-end handheld rivals like the Lenovo Legion Go 2, which also uses OLED technology.

In contrast to Lenovo’s larger 8.8-inch panel, Asus has opted for a more compact 7.4-inch screen, though it’s still slightly larger than the 7-inch display on the regular ROG Xbox Ally X. Therefore, this suggests a middle ground between portability and immersive gameplay.

While the exact resolution and brightness figures are still under wraps, Asus confirms support for a high refresh rate alongside AMD FreeSync. This points to a smooth, tear-free gaming experience designed for fast-paced titles, with an emphasis on responsiveness and visual clarity over raw screen size.

Design-wise, the ROG Ally X20 leans heavily into the anniversary theme, featuring a translucent black shell that exposes internal layers for a more tech-forward aesthetic, paired with gold accents across the rear strip and select buttons. It’s a more expressive design than previous Ally models, clearly aimed at collectors and long-time ROG fans as much as core gamers.

Under the hood, it’s rumoured that the device is powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme chipset, the same silicon found in the ROG Xbox Ally X. That suggests flagship-level performance for AAA gaming, emulation, and demanding PC titles on the go, though Asus has yet to confirm key details such as RAM, storage configurations and battery capacity. This leaves some uncertainty around how far the X20 pushes beyond its sibling in real-world endurance.

For now, the ROG Ally X20 reads as a celebratory but meaningful iteration, refining the handheld formula with OLED visuals and a more stylised design without completely rewriting the rulebook.
