UK drivers with medical conditions could automatically receive a Blue Badge - Are you eligible?

Experts have called on drivers to check if they are eligible for a Blue Badge, as they could benefit from more suitable parking arrangements.

Blue Badges are vital parking permits that allow drivers with disabilities to park their cars closer to various amenities.

Industry experts have suggested that misconceptions may be holding people back from applying for a Blue Badge.

Data from the Department for Transport from March 31, 2025, shows that 3.07 million Blue Badges are held in the UK.

This marked an increase of 228,000 (eight per cent) compared to the previous year, meaning 5.2 per cent of the population holds a Blue Badge.

While one per cent of Blue Badges were held by organisations, 39 per cent belonged to people who are eligible without further assessment, with the remaining 60 per cent being subject to further scrutiny.

Lee Cartwright, owner of Mobility Solutions Direct, claimed that some people may be put off from getting a Blue Badge, even if they would benefit from using it.

He stated that many people assume that a Blue Badge is only available to wheelchair users or those with severe physical disabilities.

Mr Cartwright emphasised that the scheme can support people with invisible conditions that affect their ability to travel independently.

He said: "If getting around has become more difficult, it's worth looking into whether you may be eligible.

"A Blue Badge isn't about judging how someone looks; it's about understanding the impact a condition has on their ability to access everyday places."

Motorists can automatically get a Blue Badge if they are aged three or over and meet certain requirements, including if they receive PIP for mobility issues, or if they are registered blind.

When applying for a Blue Badge, drivers will need proof of identity, proof of address, a recent head and shoulders digital photo, their National Insurance number and contact details.

Drivers will pay £10 for a Blue Badge in England and £20 in Scotland, while the permit is free in Wales.

Mr Cartwright continued, saying: "A Blue Badge is there to help people stay independent and continue taking part in everyday life.

"Understanding who may be eligible means more people can access support when they need it."

People will automatically qualify for a Blue Badge if they:

• Receive the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
• Receive a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) because they can't walk more than 50 metres (a score of eight points or more under the 'moving around' activity of the mobility component)
• Are registered blind (severely sight impaired)
• Receive a War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
• Have received a lump sum benefit within tariff levels one to eight of the Armed Forces and Reserve Forces (Compensation) Scheme and have been certified as having a permanent and substantial disability that causes inability to walk or very considerable difficulty in walking
• Receive the mobility component of PIP and have obtained 10 points specifically for descriptor E under the 'planning and following journeys' activity, on the grounds that they are unable to undertake any journey because it would cause them overwhelming psychological distress
