Álvarez

Arsenal have reportedly opened exploratory talks over a potential move for Julián Álvarez, as the Gunners weigh up a marquee striker signing.

Atlético Madrid are understood to be open to selling the former Manchester City forward, who won a treble under Pep Guardiola, for around €100 million (£86.8m). Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has close ties to Álvarez, having been involved in negotiating his switch from City to Atlético, which could smooth initial discussions.

Competition, however, is fierce. Barcelona are also keen on the Argentina international and are believed to be the current favourites should Atlético sanction a sale. Álvarez, 25, still has four-and-a-half years remaining on his contract after arriving in Madrid in 2024, strengthening Atlético’s negotiating position.

Since joining Diego Simeone’s side, Álvarez has been prolific, scoring 40 goals in 85 appearances across competitions. His Premier League pedigree is equally compelling: 20 goals in 67 league outings during his time at City.

Arsenal’s interest is understandable given their need for greater firepower. Current centre-forward options Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Jesus have managed a combined six league goals this season, while Kai Havertz has been hampered by injury.

Despite those challenges, Mikel Arteta’s men are seven points clear at the top with 16 games remaining, and remain alive in all four competitions they’ve played in. A move for Álvarez would signal serious intent to turn dominance into silverware.
