Angelina Jolie Gets Emotional as She Speaks on Her Mom Breast Cancer Battle

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie grew emotional during a Q&A session at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as she opened up about losing her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to cancer.

The moment came after an audience member, who had recently lost a loved one to cancer, asked Jolie if she had any advice for coping with such grief.

Fighting back tears, Jolie recalled her mother’s painful battle with breast and ovarian cancer, which claimed her life in 2007 at the age of 56.

“I’m very sorry for your loss,” Jolie said, visibly moved as she rolled her eyes, while director Alice Winocour and co-star Anyier Anei comforted her.

She added: “One thing I remember my mother saying when she had cancer… we’d had a dinner and people were asking her how she was doing. She said, “All people ever ask me about is cancer.

“I would say, if you know someone who’s going through something, ask them about everything else in their life as well. They’re a whole person. And they’re still living.”
