Amazon to deploy over 1,000 electric light and medium-duty trucks in India

American e-commerce giant Amazon will introduce more than 1,000 electric light and medium-duty trucks in India over the next five years as it expands the use of electric vehicles in its delivery network. The vehicles will join more than 10,000 electric vehicles already operating in the company’s Indian logistics fleet. Amazon said the trucks will help move packages through its fulfilment network and reduce transport-related emissions.

The company also plans to expand its global electric delivery van fleet to at least 100,000 vehicles by 2030, after rolling out more than 50,000 electric delivery vans worldwide since the programme began in 2022.

In India, more than 80% of Amazon deliveries are made using two-wheelers. The company said smaller vehicles are well suited to urban deliveries because they are easier to manoeuvre through congested streets, cheaper to operate and easier to park than larger vehicles.

It has put more than 15 electric vehicle models on the road across the United States, the European Union and India, including e-cargo bikes, e-mopeds and three-wheelers used to test delivery operations in different markets, the company said.

The expansion is part of Amazon’s wider climate plans. The company co-founded the Climate Pledge in 2019 and has committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

As part of that effort, Amazon partnered with electric vehicle maker Rivian and ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans. Amazon and Rivian also worked together on a purpose-built electric delivery vehicle.

“In three short years, a simple sketch turned into the custom electric delivery vehicles on the road today,” Amazon said.

Amazon expects its plan to have at least 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road globally by 2030 to help eliminate millions of metric tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
