….Says democracy must deliver security and prosperity

Barr. Donald C. Amamgbo (Okosisi Ihiala), a leading voice in Nigerian politics, has challenged Nigerians to critically assess the state of the nation’s democracy, asking whether the country can truly be described as democratic amid worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

In his 2026 Democracy Day message, Amamgbo noted that while June 12 remains a powerful symbol of the people’s victory over oppression and the restoration of civil rule, democracy must be measured beyond elections and political rhetoric.

According to him, the true test of democracy lies in its ability to guarantee security, justice, accountability, prosperity, and the protection of human dignity.

The legal practitioner and former senatorial aspirant expressed concern over the rising cost of living, unemployment, inflation, and declining purchasing power, stressing that many Nigerians are struggling to meet their basic needs despite years of democratic governance.

Amamgbo also lamented the worsening security situation across the country, particularly the continued captivity of teachers and students kidnapped in Oyo State, describing their ordeal as a painful reminder that many citizens still live under constant fear.

“A democracy that cannot guarantee the safety of its citizens is a democracy that requires urgent strengthening,” he stated.

He urged governments at all levels to intensify efforts toward rescuing all kidnapped victims, securing lives and property, revitalizing the economy, creating employment opportunities for young people, and restoring public confidence in governance.

The Anambra South born business leader further called on public office holders to embrace servant leadership, transparency, accountability, and people-oriented governance, insisting that the dividends of democracy must be visible in the daily lives of ordinary citizens.

While commending the sacrifices of security personnel, Amamgbo encouraged them to sustain the fight against kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes threatening national stability.

Despite the nation’s challenges, he expressed optimism that Nigeria can still attain greatness through visionary leadership, national unity, and a collective commitment to the common good.

“Democracy must work for the people. The ultimate goal is a Nigeria where security is guaranteed, opportunities abound, justice prevails, and every citizen can pursue their dreams without fear,” Amamgbo said.

He also urged Nigerians to remain peaceful, participate actively in the democratic process, and continue demanding accountability from leaders through lawful means.
