An air ambulance with seven people on board has crashed just 23 minutes after taking off from eastern India, triggering an urgent search and rescue operation.

The incident occurred on February 23 in Chatra district, located in the Indian state of Jharkhand. The aircraft was carrying two pilots, a patient, two attendants, a doctor, and a paramedic.

The plane, a Beechcraft C90 operated by Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd, departed from the state capital, Ranchi, at 7:11 p.m. local time. Authorities confirmed that radar contact was lost 23 minutes later.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the aircraft lost communication after briefly establishing contact with air traffic control in Kolkata. In an official statement, the DGCA said:
“After establishing contact with Kolkata, at 19:34 IST aircraft lost communication and radar contact with Kolkata at approximately 100 NM south-east of Varanasi,”

The aircraft’s tail number was confirmed as VT-AJV.

Providing an update on the response effort, the aviation regulator added:
“The district administration search and rescue team is at the location and AAIB team is being dispatched for investigation. Further information will be shared,”

The patient on board was identified as a 41-year-old man who had sustained 63 percent burn injuries in an accident. He had been receiving intensive care treatment and was being transported to Delhi for advanced medical care when the crash occurred.

Reports indicate that all seven occupants of the aircraft are feared dead, though officials have not yet issued a final confirmation pending recovery and investigation efforts.

Authorities continue to work at the crash site as aviation investigators prepare to determine the cause of the accident.
