Achimugu Honoured for Advancing Passenger Rights in Nigeria’s Aviation Sector

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, has been honoured with the 2026/2027 African Brands Personality Award in recognition of his contributions to consumer protection and advocacy for passenger rights in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The award was presented in Abuja on June 29, 2026, by the African Brands team led by Godwin Enesi Chatta.

Speaking after receiving the award, Achimugu highlighted the statutory responsibilities of his directorate, which include addressing passenger complaints arising from flight delays, cancellations, baggage issues and ticket refund disputes.

He stated that the Authority, under his stewardship, has recorded its highest volume of ticket refunds, compensation payments and regulatory compliance in recent years.

According to him, the NCAA achieved a 65 per cent case resolution rate in 2025, representing a 10 per cent improvement over the previous year. He expressed confidence that the agency is on course to attain a 90 per cent resolution rate before the end of 2026.

Achimugu dedicated the award to his children, members of his team and the leadership of the NCAA, while urging air travellers to familiarise themselves with their rights and responsibilities as passengers.

He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening consumer protection mechanisms and enhancing service delivery across Nigeria’s aviation industry.
