The United States Geological Survey announced on Sunday that a seismic event measuring 6.2 in magnitude occurred in the southwestern region of Mexico.

Reports indicate that the epicenter of the tremor was located eight kilometers from Coalcoman de Vazquez Pallares, a municipality with a population of approximately 20,000, situated roughly 600 kilometers west of the capital, Mexico City.

The earthquake is reported to have occurred at a depth of 86.2 kilometers.

In a communication on X, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the national emergency services indicated there were no significant updates and that they were commencing review protocols in Coalcoman.

CREEBHILLS notes that Mexico is situated on five tectonic plates, rendering it one of the most seismically vulnerable nations globally, particularly along the Pacific coastline.

It is worth recalling that in 1985, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1, centered along the Pacific coast, devastated much of central and southern Mexico, resulting in thousands of fatalities and extensive damage in Mexico City.

Furthermore, on September 19, 2017, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake resulted in the deaths of no fewer than 369 individuals, predominantly in the capital.

On the same day in 2022, reports indicated that central Mexico experienced another seismic event, just hours after millions of citizens participated in a simulated earthquake safety drill.
