Ahead of the official election results announcement, authorities in Cameroon have confirmed that four people were killed in clashes between security forces and supporters of opposition leader Issa Tchiroma. Tchiroma, who challenged President Paul Biya's 43-year grip on power in the October 12th ballot, had called on his supporters to hold peaceful marches on the eve of the announcement, despite a national ban on public gatherings. The opposition figure claims to have won 54.8 percent of the vote, against the 31.3 percent he attributes to the 92-year-old incumbent, Paul Biya. However, many analysts anticipate that Biya will secure an eighth term in an electoral system that critics often describe as rigged. In Douala, Cameroons largest city, the regional governor reported that on Sunday, demonstrators attacked police stations and a gendarmerie brigade in two districts.   Cameroon's Constitutional Council announces that 92-year old President Paul Biya has won an eighth term. Having first come to power in 1982, the result means that he can now govern until 2032. One demonstrator recounted that the shooting began with "live ammunition," and that "three bodies fell in front of us.Earlier on Sunday, police used teargas to disperse hundreds of people in Tchiromas northern stronghold of Garoua. There, activists defied the ban, carrying national flags and banners reading Tchiroma 2025 and chanting, Goodbye Paul Biya, Tchiroma is coming. For several days, supporters have been gathered around the opposition leader's home. Tchiroma claimed in a video on Sunday that military personnel had tried to remove him from his residence. Two opposition figures from a coalition that endorsed Tchiroma were also arrested in their homes in Douala on Friday. The capital, Yaounde, saw a heavy police presence, and the call to protest did not appear to be widely heeded. However, the Minister of Territorial Administration warned on Saturday that the protests create the conditions for a security crisis and contribute to the implementation of an insurrectionist project. Amid the unrest, significant disruptions to internet access have been reported, which monitors suggest "may limit coverage of events on the ground." The Constitutional Council is scheduled to announce the final election results on Monday morning. The post 4 k!lled during deadly clashes in Cameroon as opposition challenges election results (video) appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
