25 Persons Killed In Enugu In Multiple Crashes At Nigerian Army Checkpoint On Democracy Day

In a deeply saddening turn of events, a tragic accident has claimed the lives of as many as 25 people in Enugu State, according to reports from SaharaReporters.

The incident occurred at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway and involved a total of 10 vehicles, including both private and commercial buses. The accident, reportedly caused by a Nigerian Army checkpoint, has left numerous others seriously injured, with emergency services currently transporting them to hospitals in and around the state capital.

Eyewitnesses to the harrowing scene described how a truck, unable to brake, careened out of control down the hilly road, colliding with multiple vehicles stopped at the checkpoint.

"A trailer plying the newly constructed lane failed to brake and smashed into more than 10 cars, both private and commercial buses. The army checkpoint at that axis continues to claim lives. More than 25 persons lost their lives instantly, and many were rushed to the hospital," recounted one eyewitness to SaharaReporters.

Disturbing footage from the scene shared with SaharaReporters depicts the aftermath of the accident, with bodies strewn across the road and vehicles, including a petrol tanker truck, submerged in a nearby ditch. The severity of the collision left some cars unrecognizable, serving as a stark reminder of the tragic toll of road accidents in Nigeria.
