Police in Zomba have arrested five people and confiscate two buses which were carrying 72 tenants believed to be going to the Northern Region to work in farms.

Spokesperson for Zomba Police Patricia Sipiliano has confirmed the development and says the suspects are yet to be charged.

She says the buses were intercepted around Zomba Zero last night.

“There were also other passengers who were on their way to Mzuzu who are still being kept at Zomba Police station and are demanding transport refund,” Sipiliano said.

Meanwhile, Zomba District Social Welfare Officer Christopher Ndaona has since said they are arranging to transport the people who included 25 children to their respective areas.

“It is sad the people were not properly informed on where they are going to employed and terms of service were not discussed.

“So, this is a breach of labour laws since we believe they could be exploited, as such we want them to be back to their homes,” Ndaona said.

Some of the people are reported from Zomba and Mulanje districts.
