the compound

Whenever I finish a book, it immediately rewires my reading mood for the foreseeable future. The story might be over, but I’m simply too emotionally tied to the feeling it gave me to quietly file it away under “something I read this year.” I want to stay in that exact headspace just a littttttle longer. Which is why, after closing the pages on our January Book Club read, The Compound, my TBR is suddenly undergoing a whole personality shift. Now, I require morally questionable characters in dystopian Love Island spaces and a psychological takedown of consumerism, stat.

The Compound gave us a very specific kind of craving. Something that can only be cured by a carefully selected lineup of pressure-cooker stories that escalate so subtly you don’t realize you’re stressed—until it’s midnight and just hit page 200. That’s exactly why we pulled a list of reads that carry the same tense, morally complicated energy that made Lily’s story linger. Read on if you’re desperate for a read similar to Aisling Rawle’s to hold you over until February’s book club pick pulls us into a brand-new spiral all over again (though you can pick it up now, too, if you just can’t wait!!).

When record executive Theo meets the Future Saints, they’re bombing at a dive bar in their hometown. Since the tragic death of their manager, the band has been in a downward spiral and Theo has been dispatched to coax a new—and successful—album out of them, or let them go. Immediately, Theo is struck by Hannah, the group’s impetuous lead singer, who’s gone off script by debuting a whole new sound, replacing their California pop with gut-wrenching rock. When this new music goes viral, Theo puts his career on the line to give the Saints one last shot at success.
