A 12-year-old boy identified as Liam has endured a life-threatening medical ordeal after complications from what was expected to be a routine tonsil surgery.

The procedure, carried out on March 17, 2025, was initially intended to treat a mild case of obstructive sleep apnea. However, shortly after returning home, his condition took a serious turn.

According to his parents, Ashleigh and Dan Klaver, Liam began showing signs that he was not recovering properly. Their concern escalated when they noticed significant bleeding.

Recounting the experience, his mother said:
“I thought it was going to be a simple surgery and we’d go get ice cream afterwards to soothe his throat.

“But that wasn’t the case at all.

“When he came home that night, he didn’t seem to be healing.

“After my husband and I saw how much blood there was, we became very concerned.

“Suddenly, a clot the size of my palm came out.

“I rushed him back to the hospital where doctors discovered the source of the bleed.

“He went into surgery and six hours later, we were told he was in a coma.

“Both of us were so overwhelmed with emotion that we couldn’t think about him not waking up.”

Doctors later discovered that a major artery supplying blood to his brain was leaking, causing severe internal bleeding.

Liam required emergency treatment, including a transfusion of nine units of blood and the insertion of a medical coil to stop the bleeding. During surgery, he went into cardiac arrest and was unresponsive for approximately 10 minutes before being revived. He was then placed on a ventilator for his safety.

After spending 10 days in a coma, Liam began to show signs of improvement and eventually regained consciousness, even managing to walk and talk again.

However, further complications followed. On April 21, 2025, the coil was removed, but this led to another serious episode.

His father explained:
“He began haemorrhaging blood from his nose and mouth.

“Liam then told us ‘good night’ as he was placed into a coma again.

“When he woke up, he was so scared.

“Each surgery following left us on pins and needles.”

In total, Liam spent 76 days in hospital before finally returning home on June 5, 2025.

Despite surviving the ordeal, his recovery remains ongoing. Due to his condition, he has been unable to return to many of his favourite activities, and doctors have warned that he may not be able to fully resume them.

The family has since launched a fundraiser to support his ongoing care, raising $38,996 out of a $50,000 goal.

Speaking about their current situation, his mother added:
“Liam has good days and bad days; emotionally and physically.

“It’s a constant trauma of not being able to do all the same things as his peers anymore.

“We wouldn’t wish our worst horrors that came true on anyone.

“As a family, we try to stay positive as much as we can, even when we’re dealing with unknown outcomes.

“Our lives look completely different now than they did a year ago.

“We’d love to make his wish of seeing the Wonders of the World come true in the future.

“If something seems scary, don’t feel bad about reaching out to a doctor or going to the hospital.

“Some bleeding is normal – but if it’s a lot, seek attention immediately before it’s too late.”
