Fresh violence erupted in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State on Sunday night, claiming at least 10 lives in near-simultaneous attacks on the communities of Jol and Dorowa Babuje.

According to local leaders, nine people were killed in Dorowa Babuje (also referred to as Rob District), while one person died in Jol. The assaults occurred between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm, with gunmen arriving on motorcycles and launching coordinated raids.

Barrister Solomon Dalyop, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYMA), confirmed the details in an interview. He stated that attackers in Jol came from the Manga axis despite prior warnings to security agencies about suspicious movements in the area.

In Dorowa Babuje, the assailants reportedly emerged from the Jong-Wereh area, where they had been camping.

Operation Rainbow personnel in Jol repelled the attackers, limiting further casualties, while the military’s swift response in Dorowa Babuje prevented a higher death toll.

“If not for the quick intervention of the military in Dorowa, the casualty figure would have been much higher. We must commend them for their swift response,” Dalyop said.

Efforts to get an official comment from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, did not respond to inquiries. No official police statement had been issued as of press time.

These incidents form part of a recurring cycle of violence in the region, where farming communities in Riyom and surrounding areas have faced repeated night raids, ambushes, and displacement in recent months.

Residents now live in heightened fear, mourning losses while demanding stronger, sustained security measures from federal and state authorities.

Community leaders and youth groups have called for long-term peacebuilding initiatives to address the root causes of the insecurity in these volatile flashpoints.

The attacks come amid ongoing tensions in Plateau State, with similar reports of killings in nearby areas over the weekend, highlighting the persistent challenges of communal clashes and banditry in the region.
