This special MX-5 is the first production model from the new Mazda Spirit Racing division

You Can’t Buy Mazda’s Best MX-5 In America, But You Can Drive It In GT7
  • Mazda introduced Spirit Racing 12R as a limited-production MX-5.
  • Only 200 will be built and exclusively sold in the Japanese market.
  • Upgrades include 197 hp engine, Bilstein dampers, and a stiffer chassis.

In a world where new cars are becoming heavier and larger, the Mazda MX-5 stands out by being compact and lightweight. It’s no surprise, then, that the brand used it to launch the Mazda Spirit Racing department last year, introducing a sportier version of the MX-5, known as the 12R.

Unfortunately, production of the model is capped at just 200 units and it’ll only be sold in Japan. Perhaps to appease those who will never get the chance to drive the 12R, let alone own one, Mazda has added it to Gran Turismo 7. Of course, driving it in a game will be nothing like the real thing, but it’s still better than nothing, right?

Digital Detour

Mazda says it has gone to some lengths to ensure the MX-5 12R available in Gran Turismo 7 is a faithful replica of the real model. That car was scanned to ensure every square inch of it is perfect and Mazda also recorded its exhaust note. Gamers will be able to get behind the wheel of the MX-5 for 12,000,000 credits.

The Mazda Spirit Racing division was formed to replace Mazdaspeed, which was discontinued over a decade ago. Numerous upgrades have been made to the 12R to make it an even better canyon carver or track toy without compromising the on-street comfort and poise that have helped make the compact roadster such an icon.

Mechanical Upgrades

The 12R’s 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine has been treated to a suite of new hardware, including revised camshafts, bespoke pistons, a reworked cylinder head, and a fresh exhaust manifold, resulting in powering now peaking at 197 hp. Complementing the extra performance are Bilstein dampers, additional underbody bracing, and grippier tires to sharpen the handling.

The exterior has also been given a series of thoughtful touches. Standard kit includes lightweight six-spoke black Rays TE37 wheels, bright red brake calipers, extended side skirts, and a front splitter unique to the model. Together, they lend the MX-5 12R a purposeful stance without straying from its clean, classic proportions.
