Scientists say the species plays a critical role in maintaining marine biodiversity while reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s growing importance in global marine conservation research.

One of the Red Sea’s most remarkable locations is Shi’b Habil, a submerged coral reef located about four kilometers off the coast of Al-Lith, south of Jeddah. Every year during April and May, warmer waters and abundant plankton attract large seasonal gatherings of whale sharks, creating one of the world’s best-documented aggregation sites for the species.

The site gained international scientific recognition after a local diving operator introduced researchers to the area, leading to extensive studies documenting this rare seasonal phenomenon. Unlike most whale shark aggregation sites worldwide, Shi’b Habil is distinguished by an unusually balanced population of both male and female whale sharks, making it exceptionally valuable for scientific research.

Despite being the largest fish on Earth, the whale shark is a gentle filter feeder that survives on plankton and microscopic marine organisms. It poses no threat to humans and has become one of the ocean’s most iconic species.

The Red Sea is also home to a wide variety of sharks, including gray reef sharks and hammerheads, all of which play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.
