Woman Distracted By ICE Agents Watches Her Subaru Roll Into A Lake

Here's a timely reminder of just how important it is to put your car in Park and engage the e-brake

Woman Distracted By ICE Agents Watches Her Subaru Roll Into A Lake
  • A Subaru Forester rolled into a Massachusetts lake during an ICE arrest scene.
  • Officers in the area were reportedly arresting an alleged illegal migrant nearby.
  • If the engine wasn’t running, the SUV might still be mechanically salvageable.

Subarus have a reputation for taking on rough terrain with ease, but this Forester found itself in a situation far outside its design brief earlier this week when it rolled into a Massachusetts lake. The cause of the unintended plunge, according to reports, was something far more ordinary than mechanical failure: the driver simply forgot to put it in park.

Witnesses say the unidentified woman behind the wheel of the Subaru was distracted as agents from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) moved in nearby, reportedly to arrest an alleged undocumented migrant. In the commotion, the Subaru was left unsecured and made its way into the water.

From Commotion to Submersion

The New York Post reports that the woman had been “yelling at agents” in Upton, Massachusetts, and in the process, neglected to shift into park or set the parking brake. Photos shared to X by a Fox News reporter captured the Forester partially submerged in the lake while the woman stands helplessly on the shore.

In the video, the person filming the scene can be heard saying “Well, that sucks. Look at that, Lucy. Her car got lost.”

The same source claims that the Forester “sunk,” although we haven’t been able to find any images that show it completely underwater. If that’s true, then there’s likely no hope of saving it. However, if the Forester stayed in the position that it’s currently in, it shouldn’t have been too difficult to tow it out.

Assuming the engine was off when the Forester entered the water, serious mechanical damage might have been avoided. Modern vehicles can sometimes be brought back to life after a partial submersion, provided electronics and lubrication systems are spared from contamination. For now, though, there is no update on the Subaru’s condition.

The Boston Herald did report that the woman received a citation from Upton Police for unsafe operation of a vehicle.

There’s currently no information to suggest the woman was trying to intervene in the arrest of the reported illegal migrant, nor is it clear what she was saying to the ICE agents.
