Woman arrested for using fake currency at Assin Fosu market

A 33-year-old woman narrowly escaped being lynched by angry traders at the Assin Fosu New Market after she was reportedly caught using counterfeit currency.

The individual, who identified herself as Mary Kortey, also known as Akweley, is presently in police custody, aiding with investigations. She asserts that she hails from Kwashieman in Accra.

According to traders, she attempted to purchase food items and other goods using counterfeit GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes.

According to eyewitnesses, many traders realised they had received counterfeit notes from the same woman, prompting them to confront and assault her.

She was allegedly beaten severely before police officers intervened to save her.

A search of the suspect revealed GH¢1,900 in counterfeit notes.

Some traders indicated that this is not the first instance of fake currency circulating on market days, raising doubts about the suspect’s claims of innocence.

Reports suggest that upon her arrest, the suspect feigned mental instability, undressing and behaving erratically at the police station, which is believed to be an attempt to avoid prosecution.

Speaking to the media, the Assin Fosu District Crime Officer, ASP Rosemond Duncan, noted that during the initial interrogation, the suspect claimed that the counterfeit notes were provided to her by her boyfriend, identified only as Evans, a Nigerian national who is currently evading capture.
