Wiyaala Set To Be Outdoored As First Paramount Queen Mother of Funsi On January 17

Ghanaian music icon Wiyaala will make history on 17th January when she is outdoored as the first-ever Paramount Queen Mother of the Funsi Traditional Area in the Upper West Region.

Her selection follows a traditional process led by the custodians of the Funsi skin, who nominated her based on her character, service, and longstanding contribution to the community. Elders, women’s groups, and opinion leaders were consulted before the Paramount Chief gave final approval.

According to the Traditional Council, Wiyaala was chosen for her global promotion of Sissala culture, her commitment to rural development, and her role as a positive example for young women. Her decision to base her creative work in Funsi, rather than Accra, was also likely a major factor.

As Paramount Queen Mother, Wiyaala will take on responsibilities including:

  • championing women’s and children’s welfare
  • advising the Paramount Chief and Traditional Council
  • preserving cultural practices and festivals
  • supporting conflict resolution and community development
  • mobilizing partners for education, health, and social initiatives

Her installation will also be recognized under Ghanaian law. The Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759) provides the legal framework for traditional leadership, including Queen Mothers. After her outdooring, the Funsi Traditional Council will submit her details to the Regional House of Chiefs, which will then forward them to the National House of Chiefs for official registration. This process gives her title full legal recognition by the state.

The January17 ceremony is expected to draw community members, regional leaders, and national figures as Funsi celebrates a historic first in its traditional leadership.
