Winning the AFCON is my focus – Awaziem

Chidozie Awaziem says his full focus is on helping Nigeria win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as the Super Eagles look to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing 5–4 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final playoff match. With that setback now behind him, Awaziem insists the team must turn their attention to delivering a fourth AFCON title in Morocco.

“Winning the AFCON is my focus with Nigeria. I don’t like to dwell on not qualifying for the World Cup. For us, for the country, for our loved ones, we have to correct this mistake,” Awaziem told FC Nantes’ official website.

The versatile defender, who has been included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for AFCON 2025, is no stranger to the tournament, having featured in the 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions.

The Super Eagles will aim to restore pride and secure continental glory under head coach Eric Chelle when the competition kicks off later this month in Morocco.
