There is a variety of reasons why someone cannot sing well, or even sing at all. Many reasons are apparent, but some reasons are quite hard to figure out.

Many people lacking knowledge or the ability to hear themselves clearly struggle with identifying the reason(s) they don't have a pleasant singing voice.

The good news is that many of these problems can be solved with patience and effort. Here are five reasons you may be struggling, along with tips on how to get better.

1. You Lack Technique

Singing well requires a lot of learning and effort. A good technique often comes easily to some, but many people need to formally train their voices with the help of singing lessons or something similar.

For example, you could have a nasal tone to your voice that you never realized could be fixed with good jaw technique. Luckily, proper singing techniques can be learned at any and just requires consistency.

2. You're Tone-Deaf

People who are tone deaf are not able to hear pitches well. This can make it difficult to become a singer since you will have a tough go at singing the right notes in a song, and they will go sharp or flat.

Get a friend who has a good ear for music to help you do a pitch accuracy test with an instrument or an app. If you find that you aren't able to match pitches well, you're probably tone-deaf.

In some instances, tone-deaf singers can slowly develop a good ear for pitches with the help of ear training exercises. Again, consistency will be key here for success.

3. You Haven't Practiced Enough

Some singers just don't have enough patience when it comes to singing. With singing practice over several years, you can go from someone who can't sing to someone who is really great at singing.

Executing great vocal techniques and having control over your voice to hit pitches accurately cannot be learned overnight. Allow yourself time to get good at singing and enjoy the journey along the way.

4. You're Very Nervous

It's not uncommon to be able to sing at home or in the shower and then sound completely different when trying to sing around people. Nervousness can affect your ability to control your notes and completely ruin your good technique.

Anxiety has very common side effects that don't pair so well with singing and performing, that include shaking, trouble breathing, and trouble concentrating.

Many great singers get nervous but have learned how not to let their anxiety hinder their performances.

This is also something that takes time and a lot of practice. You want to get to a point where you can regularly practice in front of others in addition to practicing on your own.

5. You're In The Wrong Range

Here's a problem that has a very easy fix. It is important as a new singer to identify the range that your voice fits comfortably in. Many newbies go for a song that their voice isn't suited for and suddenly decide they aren't good at all before considering their range.

If you don't like how you sound singing high songs in a soprano or tenor range, just try out lower songs from alto and bass singers. In reverse, if you don't think you sound that good, showcasing a low range, go for songs in soprano and tenor ranges.
