ARMY IN WAR- PART WITH CIVILIANS.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, said those involved in the killing of soldiers in Delta State maybe are not from NIGER- DELTA. Some armed men had on Thursday, March 14, attacked and killed 16 personnel of the Nigerian Army during a peace mission to Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Speaking on Tuesday during a debate on two merged motions by Senators Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, APC, Katsina Central, and Edeh Dafinone, APC, Delta Central, Akpabio opined that those who killed the soldiers may be mercenaries.

It was reported that a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers of the 181 Amphibious Battalion were killed by hoodlums not mercenaries in the Bomadi Local Government Area of the state.

The Acting Director, of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, who made this known in a statement on Saturday, said the military personnel were killed on Thursday while on a peace mission to the community. They have vowed to go after the killers of 16 soldiers in BOMADI LGA.

They were surrounded and killed by some youths of the community, the military said.

The Senate subsequently ordered a probe into the killings. It asked the Senate Committee on Defence, Army, Navy, and Air Force to liaise with the military authorities to get more information on the remote and immediate cause of what it described as “a dastardly act.”

The senators urged the Nigerian government to recruit more police personnel to relieve the military, which has been saddled with fighting terrorists, bandits and other non-state actors.

KILLERS OF 16 SOLDIERS ARE MERCENARIES.

The Senate, however, rejected a prayer to observe a minute of silence or to commiserate with the families of innocent civilians killed in the process, saying that their numbers are still unknown.

While the Senate rejected an additional prayer for relief materials for the community by the National Emergency Management Agency, the Upper Chamber resolved that families of the killed soldiers should be compensated immediately as moved by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, and seconded by Senator Tony Nwoye.

NIGERIAN ARMY READS RIOT ACT TO OKUAMA COMMUNITY.

The Nigerian Army on Monday told the Okuama community, where 16 of its personnel were killed that no amount of propaganda would arm-twist the narrative. It warned them to be ready to face the wrath of the law for their alleged complicity in the crime.

MERCENARIES- DELTA

A statement on Monday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, alleged that the community’s complicity in the killing of its personnel had made it resort to media propaganda and shenanigans, rather than engage in a positive effort to fish out the perpetrators.

Titled, “Resort To Propaganda By Okuama Community In The Face Of Gruesome Murder Of Troops On Peace Mission Is Callous And Condemnable,” General Nwachukwu assured the law-abiding citizens of the community that there would be no reprisal from the troops.
