Why I chose Bursaspor over Celtic – Iheanacho

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has revealed that Bursaspor’s ambitious long-term project convinced him to join the Turkish second-tier club despite interest from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

The Nigeria international completed a free transfer to the Green Crocodiles last week, signing a three-year contract with the former Turkish Super Lig champions.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Iheanacho said Bursaspor’s vision of returning to the top flight and competing in Europe was the key factor behind his decision.

“Bursaspor is a big team in Turkey. I heard they won the Turkish Super League before. When I hear the project they have and how they want to go all the way to the Super League and to play in Europe as well, I said this is a big project and it’s very good for me to come and be involved and help the team,” Iheanacho said.

“I asked my agent to make sure he do everything possible to make sure I come to Bursaspor. There’s a big project and I hope I’m going to be part of it and I’m going to help the team.”

The 29-year-old also stressed that the club’s immediate priority is securing promotion to the Turkish Super Lig during the 2026/27 campaign.

“We know what we want as a team, but collectively as a team hopefully we achieve the promotion. That is our main target before the individual target of a player. My target is for us to go to the Super League,” the former Manchester City and Leicester City striker added.

Iheanacho arrives at Bursaspor as one of the club’s marquee signings as they seek an immediate return to Turkey’s top division after years away from the Super Lig.
