WHO OWNS A SONG, THE SINGER OR THE PRODUCER?

Before you shout “my song,” read this.

So, who really owns a song, the singer or the producer?

Here’s the truth:

The singer (or songwriter) owns the lyrics and melody, that’s copyright in the composition.

The producer (or record label) owns the sound recording, that’s copyright in the production.

Meaning?

If you wrote and sang the song, but someone else produced and recorded it, you both have rights.

But different rights.

You can’t just use the producer’s beat without permission, and the producer can’t release your vocals without yours.

So before you enter studio, please agree on paper who owns what.

Because when the song blows, friendship will vanish and only contract will speak.

Very important.
