‎‎According to a report by Vanguard, on Thursday January 29, 2026, the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has reaffirmed that the implementation of Shari’ah is a constitutional right for Muslims, stating that this right applies exclusively to Muslims and does not interfere with the religious practices of other communities.

‎The body stressed its continued commitment to peaceful coexistence across Nigeria’s diverse population, it highlighted that upholding the constitutional rights of Muslims is essential for national harmony and stability.

‎According to the Council, any constitutional amendments or legal changes must fully respect and protect the religious freedoms of Muslims, the Council also reiterated that Shari’ah is an integral part of Islam and cannot be separated from the faith.

‎It warned that any attempt to dilute or restrict the constitutional recognition of Shari’ah would not be acceptable to the Muslim community, this position reflects the Council’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the rights of Muslims are maintained within the framework of the Nigerian constitution.

‎In addition to reaffirming religious rights, the Council noted the importance of fostering unity among different faiths and communities in the country, it called for dialogue, understanding, and responsible engagement on matters of religion and governance.

‎The body highlighted that peaceful coexistence is a shared responsibility, and all citizens have a role in promoting tolerance and respect for diverse beliefs.

‎“Islam is Shariah, as there is no Islam without Shariah, and Muslims will not accept any constitutional amendment that falls short of granting Muslims their right,” the Council said.
