WAFCON 2026: Four things we learned from Nigeria’s 6-2 win over Egypt

The final WAFCON 2026 Group C game between Nigeria and Egypt at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat yielded eight goals as the Super Falcons overturned their deficit against Malawi to seal a spot in the quarter-final, Soccernet.ng reports.

Al-Hilal striker Asisat Oshoala broke the deadlock in the 21st minute after winning a penalty. The 31-year-old sent the ball into the top corner but was pulled off 20 minutes later due to injury problems.

She was replaced by Gift Monday, who wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet. Nadine Ghazi pulled one back for the female Pharaohs just before half-time after Alozie caused a penalty.

While Ghazi would score another in the 84th minute, it rained goals for Madugu's ladies. Uchenna Kanu and Joy Omewa found the back of the net from open play while Christy Ucheibe and Rasheedat Ajibade scored from the penalty spot.

WAFCON 2026: Four lessons from Nigeria's win over Egypt

1. Nigeria qualify for WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals

Despite falling to a 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their Group C opener, the Super Falcons fought to defeat Zambia with ten players on the pitch, before a routine victory over Egypt.

The Copper Queens, meanwhile, fell out at the group stage despite claiming six points. The loss to Nigeria ultimately cost them a place in the knockout rounds, and as such, a place in the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

2. Super Falcons still not convincing

Despite securing victory against Mohamed Kamal's side, the record WAFCON Champions weren't outrightly dominant and could've been punished if the Egyptians were more clinical.

Egypt had scored just one goal all tournament until they met the Super Falcons, and put two past them. Additionally, it appears some communication errors at the back have not been rectified.

With knockout football set to follow, any more mistakes could see Madugu's ladies exit the tournament, or lose a place at the World Cup.

3. Uchenna Kanu should start over Ijamilusi

Justine Madugu has stuck to his style of playing Florence Ijamilusi on the flank, taking away the major part of her game, as she loves to play centrally.

Meanwhile, Kanu can operate from both flanks and has shown glimpses of quality when called off the bench.

Against Malawi, she dragged Nigeria back into the game, and today, she scored as soon as she came onto the pitch, before winning a penalty that was eventually converted by Christy Uchiebe.

If Nigeria are to go far in the WAFCON 2026 tournament, then risky gambles have to pay off, and with Kanu's output, there's no reason to place her on the bench against tougher opponents.

4. Toni Payne controls the midfield

Madugu's midfield selection was off in the first game against Malawi, and the red card against Zambia made it hard to play through the midfield, but the presence of Toni Payne brought another option for the Super Falcons.

The Inter Milan midfielder connected the defenders and attackers, and her silky technique never looked better. She dropped into the half spaces, received the ball on the half-turn and created several chances.
