  • Spy photographers have snapped the Volkswagen Transporter, ahead of its debut this fall.
  • The van will be offered with diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains.
  • There will also be two wheelbases as well as panel van and Kombi variants.

Volkswagen has been teasing the Transporter T7 for what feels like an eternity, but the wait is almost over as the model will celebrate its big debut this September. While that’s still a few weeks away, spy photographers have snapped some new images of the van.

Clearly showing its Ford roots, the Transporter is a boring box with a little Botox. However, it’s been Volkswagen-ified as we can see a unique front fascia that incorporates some cues from the ID. Buzz. The headlights are the most noticeable change, but the van also has vertical air curtains at the outside edges.

The rest of the design closely echoes the Ford Transit Custom, but it appears the Transporter will have unique taillights. While that remains to be seen, Volkswagen has already confirmed the van will be offered with 122- (3,100 mm) and 137.8-inch (3,500 mm) wheelbases as well as a high roof. This will enable the T7 to hold up to 317.8 cubic feet (9 cubic meters) of cargo.

Moving inside, drivers will find a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment system. They’re joined by a new steering wheel, an electronic parking brake, and a spacious center console that offers a wireless smartphone charger. The van also has USB-A, USB-C, and 12-volt ports as well as a “power hub” that can handle up to 400 watts. If that’s not enough, the plug-in hybrid and electric variants have an inverter with an output of 2.3 kW.

Speaking of options, there will be two-, three-, four-, five- and six-seat configurations as well as panel van and Kombi variants. There will also be an assortment of diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains.

The diesels come first and customers will find outputs of 108 hp (81 kW / 110 PS), 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS), and 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS). They’ll be followed by a 230 hp (171 kW / 233 PS) plug-in hybrid as well as electric powertrains producing 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS), 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS), and 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS).
