UCH Marks World Glaucoma Day With Call For Awareness

In commemoration of this year’s World Glaucoma Day with the theme “uniting together to look for a Glaucom-free world”, a team from Ophthalmology department of the Hospital today, Monday 11th March, 2024 paid a courtesy call to the Hospital’s Management under the leadership of Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo at the Hospital’s foyer.

Prof. Tunji Oluleye, the Head, Ophthalmology Department, highlighted the alarming prevalence of Glaucoma, ranking as the second leading cause of blindness in Nigeria, following Cataracts.

Dr. Olusola Olawoye, a seasoned ophthalmologist and DCMAC Clinical, underscored the week-long program initiated on March 10th to raise awareness about Glaucoma within the community.

Activities include distributing flyers during bicycle rides, engaging in radio programs, and offering a month of free eye screenings for both members of staff and the general public at the hospital’s eye clinic.

In his remarks, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, the Chief Medical Director, commended the efforts of the Ophthalmology Department in organizing the impactful activities.

He pledged the full support of the hospital’s management and urged both members of staff and the public to prioritize regular eye pressure checks as a preventative measure against Glaucoma and subsequent blindness.
