UAE EV savings show electric vehicles cost far less per 1,000 km than petrol, driving a shift in fleets and ownership.

ABU DHABI: UAE EV savings are gaining attention as rising fuel prices widen the cost gap between petrol and electric vehicles across the country. With Super 98 petrol priced at AED 3.39 per litre and Special 95 at AED 3.28, new analysis from NIO MENA highlights a sharp contrast in running costs.

According to the findings, a standard petrol vehicle averaging 12 km per litre costs between AED 275 and AED 280 to travel 1,000 km. In comparison, an electric vehicle charged at home completes the same distance for just AED 45. This reflects UAE EV savings of over AED 230 per 1,000 km.

Even when relying on public charging infrastructure, electric vehicles remain more economical. Public AC charging costs around AED 120 per 1,000 km, while DC fast charging reaches approximately AED 180. Despite being the highest EV charging cost, it still offers notable savings compared to petrol.

For fleet operators, UAE EV savings become even more significant. Vehicles covering 30,000 km annually could save between AED 2,700 and AED 6,900 per vehicle each year, depending on charging methods. Depot or home charging delivers the highest returns, making EV adoption increasingly attractive for large-scale operations.

Beyond fuel, electric vehicles offer lower maintenance costs due to fewer mechanical components and the absence of oil changes. This further strengthens the total cost of ownership advantage.

The UAE’s supportive policy framework and Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative are also accelerating adoption. Expanding charging networks across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and other emirates are reducing range concerns and enabling wider use across logistics and corporate transport.

Mohammad Maktari, CEO of NIO MENA, said the financial case is now clear. He noted that cost savings of up to 84% make EV adoption a practical business decision rather than a sustainability preference.
