Tyler Mitchell is taking the medium of photography to new heights with his High Line debut.

A 1.45-mile-long elevated public park in Manhattan, the High Line is built on a historic rail line. Visitors can walk through gardens, view art, experience performances, and enjoy food and drinks while connecting with friends and neighbors through a unique perspective of the city.

Tyler Mitchell’s debut

A trailblazing American photographer and filmmaker, Mitchell made history as the first Black artist to shoot a cover of American Vogue, featuring Beyoncé. Since then, he has continued to leave an indelible mark as a creative committed to redefining Black identity through visual media.

Mitchell is known for using his work to explore the visual and emotional textures of the American South, where he grew up in Atlanta.

“Can photography capture memory?” said Mitchell in an interview with Sotheby’s following his Ghost Images show. “That was the question I was really asking myself a lot in making these. I have memories of Georgia more than I do actual experiences in the last decade, and so in making work there, I’m drawing out my own personal lived histories and wider Black cultural histories.”

He continued, “I think somehow the place became very sharp and clear and resonant for me. Having had distance, how it shaped me, how the style of Atlanta shaped me, how the particularities of the Black core of the city, the focus on Black culture and Black artistic production has always been in the city, even when I didn’t quite see it growing up there.”

A highly sought-after artist, Mitchell has earned recognition from some of the biggest names in the art world, including the Museum of Modern Art, which acquired his New Horizons II.

Additionally, he is represented by Gagosian Gallery, which operates more like a museum than a traditional gallery, lending prestige among top-tier collectors.

Mitchell has also leveraged his photography skills to direct and shoot major advertising campaigns for luxury brands including LVMH and Kering. His latest body of work demonstrates how he has continued to build his value beyond fashion photography.

Time for a New Sky II marks Mitchell’s High Line debut. The new art billboard is currently on view adjacent to the park at 18th Street and 10th Avenue.

This is Mitchell’s first presentation in a large-scale public format, expanding the reach of his compositions exploring Black pleasure, leisure and fantasy.

“Tyler Mitchell’s Time for a New Sky II offers an image of swept-up expanse that teases the line between reality and fantasy, natural and constructed, smoothing out the sky,” said Cecilia Alemani, the Donald R. Mullen Jr. Director and Chief Curator of High Line Art, in a news release shared with AFROTECH™ Culture. “We’re pleased to present this gentle disruption to the built environment of Manhattan buildings and streets along the green cradle of the High Line.”

Laying out the visual

According to the press release, “In Time for a New Sky II, a solitary figure stands atop a painted scenic sky backdrop, attempting to pull this artificial scene over the actual sky above him, as if ushering in the dusk. Reflecting Mitchell’s ongoing interest in bodily suspension and one’s relationship to the sky, this dreamlike work captures a tension between the natural and the constructed, mirroring the High Line’s own identity as an invented landscape suspended above the city. With the monumental New York skyline visible behind it, Time for a New Sky II is, ultimately, a work about self-possession and possibility: the whole sky gathered in one figure’s hands.”

The billboard will remain on display through early September. It follows works by Nora Turato, Katherine Bernhardt, Mickalene Thomas and Roe Ethridge as part of the High Line’s ongoing billboard series at 18th Street.
