The team returned to Marseille’s Commanderie training base in the early hours of Monday morning.

But January signings Moumbagna and Onana were attacked by robbers as they drove homewards through the port city.

And the thugs reportedly peppered the players’ car with bullets when they refused to step out of the vehicle.

The shaken stars miraculously escaped unhurt as the would-be carjackers made off.

Marseilles police have opened an enquiry.

A series of the club’s players have recently had their homes burgled while away on club duty.

But this is the first time any of their squad has faced actual gunfire.

Striker Moumbagna, 23, cost the club £7million when arriving in January from Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt.

Meanwhile 24-year-old midfielder Onana joined that same month, on loan from Turkish side Besiktas.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea striker Pierre-Aubameyang scored Marseille’s opener at Le Havre.

However despite their win they could only finish eighth in Ligue 1.

And Marseille will miss out on European football next season.
