President Donald Trump criticized Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday, calling the performance “absolutely terrible” and an “affront to the Greatness of America.”

The former president, writing on Truth Social, complained that much of the show was performed in Spanish and described the dancing as “disgusting, especially for young children,” without specifying further.

Trump also contrasted the show with his administration’s economic record, claiming it was a “slap in the face” to his achievements and predicted that the media would give it glowing reviews because they “haven’t got a clue of what is going on in the REAL WORLD.”

The show, however, was widely celebrated as a vibrant tribute to Latino culture. Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, opened his set with hits like Titi Me Pregunto and the feminist anthem Yo Perreo Sola. The performance featured a sugar cane plantation, a traditional “piragua” cart, and even a wedding scene, turning the stadium into a festive street-party atmosphere.

Celebrity guests including Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Cardi B, and Ricky Martin joined Bad Bunny on stage. Wearing an all-white ensemble and a football jersey featuring the number “64” and his surname, the artist later donned a suit jacket, blending casual and formal elements.

While largely avoiding overt political statements, Bad Bunny touched on social issues in El Apagon (“Blackout”), which highlights Puerto Rico’s unreliable power grid and the displacement of residents on the island. At one point, he carried a Puerto Rican flag, and the performance concluded with the message: “Together, we are America,” displayed on a football, and a stadium screen reading: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”

The show included a viral moment involving a young boy watching the Grammys on an old television, later revealed by the NFL to be an actor, not a detained immigrant as initially speculated online.

Bad Bunny’s selection as the Super Bowl headliner sparked conservative backlash months in advance due to his exclusive use of Spanish and previous criticism of Trump’s immigration policies. Despite this, the Puerto Rican singer delivered a performance widely praised for its celebration of culture and unity rather than political confrontation.

Growing up in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny rose from bagging groceries to global stardom after viral success on SoundCloud. Last year, he became the first Spanish-language artist to win Album of the Year at the Grammys for Debi Tirar Mas Fotos. His Super Bowl performance further cemented his status as a cultural icon, earning pride and admiration from Puerto Ricans worldwide.
