The United States has announced new visa restrictions targeting Nigerian government officials accused of financing or supporting attacks against Christians, following a directive from President Donald Trump’s administration.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a post seen by Dockaysworld, said the move is part of Washington’s response to what it describes as escalating atrocities and violations of religious freedom in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

“The United States is taking decisive action in response to the atrocities and violence against Christians in Nigeria and around the world,” Rubio said in an official statement posted on his social media account.

He said the State Department would “restrict U.S. visas for those who knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom, stressing that the policy applies to both governments and individuals.”

“This visa policy applies to Nigeria and other governments or individuals that persecute people for their religious beliefs,” he added.

The announcement follows one of many developments since President Trump’s re-designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern
