Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have thwarted a major abduction attempt by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists and rescued more than 150 civilians in Nigeria’s North-East region.

The dramatic rescue took place on Monday, March 30, 2026, along the Buratai–Kamuya axis in Borno State, according to the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Sani Uba.

Troops deployed at Dutse Kura under Sector 2 were escorting civilians when they came under sudden attack from insurgents. Surveillance assets quickly detected the terrorists attempting to abduct a large group of men, women, and children using approximately 17 vehicles.

In a swift and coordinated response, a Quick Reaction Force was immediately deployed to reinforce the embattled troops. The joint forces launched a fierce counter-attack that repelled the terrorists, forcing them to retreat towards the Mangari area.

Under sustained military pressure, the insurgents were compelled to abandon both their captives and the fleet of vehicles, successfully foiling what could have been one of the largest mass abductions in the region in recent times.

All rescued civilians — including vulnerable women and children — were safely evacuated to Buratai, where arrangements are underway for their reunification with families.

Tragically, during the hot pursuit along the Bula Zarma–Mangari axis, troops encountered an improvised explosive device (IED), which left five soldiers seriously injured. The injured personnel were promptly evacuated and are currently receiving specialised medical treatment.

The Nigerian military described the operation as a testament to the courage, vigilance, and rapid response capability of its troops in the North-East theatre.

“This success underscores our resolve to protect innocent civilians and deny terrorists the freedom to operate,” a military statement said, adding that intensified security efforts will continue, especially with the Easter period approaching.

The foiled abduction comes amid renewed military pressure on Boko Haram and ISWAP remnants, following several recent successes including the surrender of a Boko Haram commander and the rescue of other hostages in Borno State.

Residents in the North-East have welcomed the latest victory, with many expressing renewed hope that sustained operations will further degrade the terrorists’ capacity to threaten communities.
