Transport Minister advises MMT to fund its own bus expansion

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has called on the management of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited to rely more on their own internally generated funds to buy additional buses instead of depending mainly on government support.

He made the appeal on Friday, May 22, 2026, during the commissioning of 100 new Isuzu buses, which are expected to boost the company’s operations across the country.

Mr. Nikpe said MMT should put in place stronger financial measures that allow it to grow its fleet on its own.

He stressed that the company should not always wait for government assistance or private partnerships before expanding its services.

“We do not want a situation where you are given 100 buses, yet you are unable to mobilise resources internally to procure an additional 100 or 200 buses, but wait for the government to look for private partnership.

We want to see a situation where, through your internally generated funds, you are able to expand your fleet beyond what you have today,” he said.

He encouraged the transport operator to improve efficiency and use its revenue to strengthen operations over time.

The Minister also assured the public that the government is investing in other areas of the transport sector beyond road transport.

He said ongoing efforts will also cover rail, maritime, and aviation infrastructure.

“Very soon, we will be commissioning buses from one agency to another. Beyond road transport services, you will also see the Government of Ghana commissioning projects in other transport sectors including rail, maritime, and aviation,” he added.
