John Ssenyonga, a 30-year-old Arsenal supporter from Uganda, was tragically shot and killed by a security guard during celebrations of the team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

The incident took place at a restaurant in Lukaya town, located around 100 kilometers from Kampala.

Following Arsenal’s win with goals from Jurien Timber and William Saliba, fans at the venue were filled with joy and began celebrating.

However, the restaurant’s manager grew frustrated with the noise and asked the security guard to intervene. Despite warnings to quiet down, the manager went as far as cutting off the power to the building.

Tensions escalated, leading to the security guard firing shots into the crowd. This resulted in the death of Ssenyonga and the injury of another fan, Lawrence Mugejera, who is currently hospitalized.

Regional Police Spokesman Twaha Kasirye confirmed the tragic incident and strongly condemned the actions of the security guard.

“We condemn the incident, and we ask anyone with information that can help the police bring the suspect to justice to come forward,” he told local media. Kasirye also urged football fans to celebrate responsibly to avoid similar tragedies.

This is the second Arsenal fan-related fatality in Uganda in recent months. In October, 22-year-old Benjamin Okello was killed following an argument over Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool in Kyobugombe Trading Centre.
