  • Toyota Tacoma H2 Overlander debuts as a zero-emission SEMA build.
  • Powered by hydrogen fuel cell, lithium-ion battery, and dual motors.
  • Features off-road suspension, roof tent, and rugged overlanding gear.

Toyota has once again turned its attention to hydrogen power, this time applying the technology to something a lot more rugged. At this year’s SEMA Show, the company unveiled a new fuel-cell electric vehicle concept based on an overlanding version of the Tacoma midsize pickup.

The one-off project came together in just a few months through the combined efforts of Toyota Racing Development (TRD) teams in California and North Carolina, working closely with the R&D division of Toyota Motor North America.

The most demanding part of the build was fitting the Mirai’s hydrogen fuel-cell system into the Tacoma’s ladder-frame TNGA-F platform, a task that required substantial reengineering.

Hydrogen Meets the Trail

Power comes from dual electric motors producing a total of 547 hp (408 kW / 555 PS), supported by a 24.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and the Mirai-derived fuel stack. Three hydrogen tanks are tucked inside the frame rails, while a custom cooling setup borrows components from both the gas-powered Tacoma TRD Pro and the all-electric Lexus RZ.

In practical terms, all this clean technology means the Tacoma runs without emitting carbon, releasing only water from its exhaust. That water, in true off-grid spirit, can even be reused for washing or showering – though Toyota stresses it’s not for drinking – thanks to a patent-pending exhaust water recovery system.

The setup can also deliver enough power to sustain an off-grid home or recharge two EVs at once, underscoring Toyota’s focus on real-world functionality.

Can Hydrogen Handle the Rough Stuff?

Despite the extensive hydrogen conversion, the Tacoma hasn’t lost its off-road edge. It features a limited-slip differential up front and an electronic locking differential at the rear.

The chassis gains a TRD billet long-travel suspension kit with Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks, front brakes sourced from the Tundra, and custom 17-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires for serious terrain work.

Besides the new wheels and the raised stance, exterior modifications include a new skid plate, an off-road rear bumper, recovery points, a winch, additional LEDs, and a white and blue livery similar to earlier H2 concepts.

Functionality extends to the back of the truck, where a pop-up roof tent and a rear canopy that opens from all three sides turn it into a self-contained overlander. A “roboformed” tailgate carries a full-size spare wheel.

The Tacoma H2 Overlander joins more than a dozen Toyota creations set to appear at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas from November 4–7, including the bZ Time Attack, Camry GT-S, Corolla Cross Nasu Edition, and Turbo Trail Cruiser.
