Three Killed as Protest Turns Violent in Minna

By TGNews Reporter

At least three people have reportedly been killed following violent protests in Kpakungu and Gbeganu areas of Minna, Niger State, after the death of a suspected miscreant during an attempted arrest by vigilantes.

The incident began on Saturday, October 3, 2026, when vigilante members reportedly mobilised to Kpakungu to arrest some suspected miscreants. During the operation, one of the vigilantes allegedly shot and killed a man identified as Aliyu.

The development triggered protests in the area, according to the Niger State Police Command.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said police patrol teams were deployed to the area and initially restored calm.

He explained that efforts were underway to identify and arrest the vigilante member allegedly responsible for the shooting.

However, the situation reportedly escalated in the early hours of Sunday, October 4, when protesters regrouped and blocked the Bida-Minna Road.

According to Abiodun, the protesters later moved to Gbeganu, where they allegedly attacked residents. Two additional deaths were reported during the attack, bringing the reported death toll to three.

“Police tactical teams were drafted to the area. The rioters were dispersed and the road was cleared for free flow of traffic,” the police spokesman said.

The command said security personnel remain on the ground to prevent further violence, while investigations and efforts to apprehend those involved in the incidents continue.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of further escalating tensions in the affected communities.
