This latest 911 restomod blends vintage looks with modern power, carbon fiber craftsmanship, and a soundtrack that screams

Theon Design’s Porsche 911 Restomod Proves Money Really Can Buy Happiness
  • Theon Design’s Porsche 911 restomod hides a 407 hp flat-six with ITBs.
  • Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
  • Lightweight carbon fiber body panels cut weight far below a modern GT3.

Singer may have kicked off the modern Porsche 911 restomod movement, but the idea has since spread widely, inspiring a host of builders to put their own spin on the classic shape. Among the most notable in the UK is Theon Design, and its latest commission, the result of more than 18 months of work, might be the company’s most impressive effort so far.

A Gem Of An Air-Cooled Flat-Six

No doubt the highlight of the restomod is the engine. It is an air-cooled, 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six with independent throttle bodies that develops 407 hp at 7,600 rpm and 293 lb-ft (397 Nm) of torque. While the 4.0-liter engine you’ll find in a new 911 GT3 has a 100 hp advantage, Theon’s car weighs just 1,150 kg (2,535 lbs), or some 312 kg (688 lbs) less, which should make it a joy to drive.

Theon Design has added an adjustable exhaust to the car, allowing it to operate quietly in town or to scream when on the open road. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

There’s plenty more to like, too. The classic 911 has been fitted with a TracTive semi-active suspension that’s designed to cope with the poorest roads in the UK and even has a lift kit, perfect for navigating steep driveways and speed bumps. Stopping power is provided by the brakes of a 993-gen 911 Carrera RS and sits on custom 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

Upgrades Aplenty

Like other projects from Theon Design, the donor car was stripped back to its bare metal, and the structure was strengthened with new seam welding. It has then been fitted with lightweight carbon fiber body parts painted in Ice Green Metallic, accented by Polished Eclipse Chrome elements.

The interior is just as much a work of art as the exterior. Highlights include Recaro CS seats with carbon fiber backs, gray Alcantara, custom-made gauges, and a hidden Alpine head unit complete with six Focal speakers.

The Price Of Happiness

Buying a Porsche from Theon requires a healthy bank account as its commissions start at £420,000 ($564,000) for Coupe models like this, excluding the cost of the donor car. Well, you didn’t expect a 911 restomod like this to come cheap, did you?
