There's a hard truth in today's automotive industry that is impossible to ignore: performance doesn't come cheap. This isn't something new, as you've always had to pony up to get a vehicle with a respectable amount of power, but there have always been plenty of budget heroes that made over 200 horsepower accessible to the masses for under $30,000. However, the list is shrinking, and in 2025 it's smaller than ever. Annual price increases have taken a few of our favorites out of contention. For example, the Subaru BRZ starts at $32,210 for the 2025 model year, and, among mid-size trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado has moved up to $31,900. And as of last week Friday, the Civic Si no longer makes the cut, either.
