Former US President Jimmy Carter visited Nigeria on on 31 March 1978. That was when General Olusegun Obasanjo was Military Head of State. Carter was the first US President to set foot on Nigerian soil. He was of the Democratic Party. The second American leader, also a Democrat, to visit the country was Bill Clinton, from 28 to 29 August, 2000. He was also received by Obasanjo as a civilian President.
