Thai Woman Wakes Up in Coffin Just Before Cremation

In a moment that stunned temple staff and captivated Thailand, an incredible near-death story unfolded at the Wat Rat Prakhong Tham temple. A 65-year-old woman, who had been brought in for cremation, was discovered to be very much alive after she was observed moving inside her coffin.

The incident was captured in a video posted on the temple’s Facebook page, showing the woman lying in a white coffin in the back of a pickup truck as she slightly moved her arms and head, leaving the staff understandably shocked.

The Journey to the Temple

The woman’s brother, Pairat, had driven her all the way from the province of Phitsanulok to Bangkok, believing she was deceased and seeking cremation services.

In a chat with the Associated Press, the temple’s general and financial manager confirmed that Pairat’s sister had been bedridden for two years. Her health had deteriorated, and she eventually became unresponsive and “stopped breathing two years ago.”

The Faint Knocking

It was as the final arrangements were being discussed that the unbelievable happened. Pairat was called by the staff, who had heard a faint knock coming from the coffin.

“I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled,” Pairat recounted. “I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin. She must have been knocking for quite some time.”

This authoritative account from the brother confirms the near-miraculous timing of the discovery, just moments before the cremation was scheduled to proceed.

The Missing Death Certificate Complication

The strange turn of events was compounded by a pre-existing medical issue and bureaucracy.

Organ Donation Wish:
Due to his sister’s previous wish to donate her organs, Pairat had initially taken her to a hospital in Bangkok.

Hospital Refusal:
The hospital “refused to accept the brother offer becuse he didnt have an official death certificate.”

Desperate, Pairat approached Wat Rat Prakhong Tham on Sunday, as the temple offered a free cremation service. However, he was once again refused due to the missing death certificate.

The temple manager was explaining to Pairat how to legally obtain the required document when the faint knocking sound alerted them to the woman’s true condition.

The woman was quickly assessed by the temple staff and immediately sent to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. In a generous act of benevolence, the abbot of the temple has confirmed that they “would cover her medical expenses, according to Pairat.”
